Work Opportunities in US for Indian Students

Students on an F-1 visa may not be eligible to work off-campus during their first year but may take up on-campus employment opportunities. In their second academic year, students can apply for two types of off-campus opportunities:

• Curricular Practical Training (CPT): This includes internships and work opportunities that are an important part of the study program that a student has enrolled for.
• Optional Practical Training (OPT): It is a temporary employment opportunity concerning the student’s major area of study. Eligible students can apply for employment authorization for 12 months before or after completion of their studies. Also, under certain conditions, students earning a degree in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields can apply for an extension of their OPT work authorization.
