What is Wellness Benefit in Health Insurance?

Wellness Benefit is an additional benefit that provides insured individuals (18 years and above) covered as adults in the health insurance plan with a discount on policy renewal based on the number of Healthy Days covered in the previous policy year. One Healthy Day is accumulated by achieving 10,000 steps in a day in the Care Supreme health insurance policy. While in Ultimate Care, for an insured person aged 60 or older, 8,000 steps make a Healthy Day. According to Healthy Days, the discount is given below-

Who is Eligible and How to Get a Discount? 

The insured person who is covered as an adult and has opted explicitly for the Wellness Benefit is eligible to get the benefits of this feature. 

You earn a 'Healthy day' by achieving 10,000 steps or more in a single day. The discount you receive is determined by the total number of Healthy days you achieve during the Policy Year. This reward can be up to 30% of the premium.

Important Rules for Discount

These rules of wellness benefit in insurance explain how your discount points and healthy days are counted. They help you understand how discounts are calculated, which activities are eligible, and how each member’s contribution affects your total reward.

  • Individual Policies: The benefit is calculated based on your personal activity. Your renewal benefit is calculated solely on the Healthy Days you earn through your own activity.
  • Floater Policies: The renewal discount is calculated by taking the average number of Healthy days earned by adult insured members. 

For example, if one member achieves 260 Healthy days and another 230, the average is 245 Healthy days, which translates to a 20% discount.

  • Multi-Tenure Policies: For policies covering multiple years, the discount is calculated using the average number of Healthy days earned over the entire policy tenure.

Discount Eligibility and Policy Conditions 

Policyholders must ensure that their tracking device is correctly mapped to the Care Health Insurance Limited (CHIL) system or mobile application for step count validation. Steps recorded during the last two months of the current Policy Period will not be considered for the ongoing renewal cycle. These steps will be carried forward to the following Policy Period.

Use Case Scenario: Family Floater Policy

The Mehra family, Mr Mehra, Mrs Mehra, and their son Arjun are covered under a family floater policy with the Wellness Benefit in health insurance. Their eligible Healthy Days are:

  • Mr Mehra: 250 days
  • Mrs Mehra: 230 days
  • Arjun: 220 days

Note: Arjun is not covered as an adult in the policy, so he is not eligible for wellness benefits and renewal discounts. 

The renewal discount is based on the average Healthy Days:

Average = (250+230)/2= 240 Healthy Days

With an average of 240 Healthy Days, the family qualifies for a 20% renewal discount. 

Use Case Scenario: Multi-Tenure Family Floater Policy

The Sharma family (Mr Sharma, Mrs Sharma, and their daughter Rhea) is covered under a Family Floater Policy with the Wellness Benefit. During the policy year, they recorded the following eligible Healthy Days (after removing the days from the last two months), it means the below healthy days are of 10 months.

  • Mr Sharma: 262 Healthy Days
  • Mrs Sharma: 135 Healthy Days

Rhea would not be considered, as she is a child, and only adults are eligible for this benefit and discount. Since it is a floater policy, the renewal discount is based on the average Healthy Days of all members covered as adults in the family floater policy.

Average= (262+135)/2​= 198.5

With an average of 198 Healthy Days, the family qualifies for a 15% discount on the total renewal premium.

Note: The healthy days from the last two months carry forward into the next policy year.

The wellness benefit provides access to a set of digital services designed to support day-to-day health management. These services are available to Insured Members aged 12 years and above and may include:

  • Fitness tracker
  • E-consultation
  • BMI calculator
  • Digital fitness coaching

Digital wellness services are available only through the empanelled Provider network. Policyholders may choose any Provider within this network. These services are intended solely for general wellness support. They are not a substitute for medical advice and must not be used for the diagnosis or treatment of any medical or mental health condition.

Q. How do I earn a renewal premium discount under the Wellness Benefit?

You earn a discount by completing Healthy Days, which means walking at least 10,000 steps in a day (8,000 steps for 60+ years old in the Ultimate Care plan). The total number of Healthy days in a year decides your discount percentage.

Q. How is the discount calculated in a floater policy?

The discount is based on the average Healthy Days of all Insured Members. This ensures every member's activity contributes to the final discount.

Q. What happens to Healthy Days completed in the last two months of my policy?

Healthy days from the last two months are not counted for the current renewal. They will be carried forward and considered in the next Policy Period.

Q. Is device mapping mandatory for earning Healthy Days?

Yes, the tracking device must be mapped to the CHIL system for your steps and Healthy Days to be recorded. Without mapping, the data cannot be validated.

Q. When is the discount applied if I pay my premium in instalments?

The discount is applied only after the first six months of premium have been paid. This applies to all instalment payment modes.

Q. Do I need to link my fitness device to get the Healthy Days benefit?
