Tips for Home Cleaning and Sanitizing the House for Coronavirus Prevention

None of us ever imagined that in the year 2020, we would witness one of the world’s worst health crises. The deadly Covid-19 has affected the health of millions of people, with new cases recorded every day. Stepping out of the house is like getting ready to fight an invisible enemy. People are gradually getting accustomed to the new normal and social distancing norms. One of the best measures recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for coronavirus prevention, apart from washing hands and wearing masks, is cleaning frequently touched surfaces.

You might find a host of ideas on the internet on how to sanitize a house. However, it is also the time to stay away from misinformation and only follow the prescribed methods.

Researchers say that the virus can stay on surfaces for as long as a week. Given that restrictions are eased, it increases the risks of touching contaminated surfaces. Hence, we share some useful tips to disinfect your house, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

How to Disinfect the House and Other Surfaces?

Clean the surfaces first: The first step before you disinfect is home cleaning. If the touched surfaces are visibly dirty, start by cleaning them with detergent or soap and water. Then, you can go ahead with disinfecting them. You can use alcohol-based disinfectants or other disinfectants. The common surfaces which you should clean and disinfect include:

  • Doorknobs and handles
  • Mobile Phones
  • Switches
  • Tables
  • Countertops
  • Bathroom
  • Faucets
  • Sinks

Disinfect the surfaces: Cleaning will remove the dirt, dust, and other contaminants. However, to kill the germs and viruses, you should apply appropriate disinfectant, depending on the surface. Alcohol-based solutions should have at least 70% alcohol. You can create a homemade disinfectant or diluted household bleach solution containing 5.25%–8.25% sodium hypochlorite, if suitable for the surface. You can also rely on products like Dettol that are effective in disinfecting the surfaces.

  • Soft Surfaces: Use appropriate cleaners for sanitizing surfaces such as carpeted floor, drapes, and rugs.
  • Electronics: Use wipeable cover for appliances. For disinfecting keyboards, remote controls, etc., you could use alcohol-based wipes or use sprays and a soft cloth. Avoid disinfecting wipes on the computer monitor.
  • Laundry: Wash clothing, linens, and other items as per instructions by the manufacturer. Use lukewarm water and add disinfectant in the clothes. Make sure you wear gloves while handling them.

How Long Does Coronavirus Stay on Different Surfaces?

Scientists are still studying how long the virus can live on various surfaces. Experts tell us how long the virus can last on the following materials:

  • Plastic: 3 to 7 days
  • Glass: Up to 4 days
  • Cardboard: 24 Hours
  • Paper: Up to 4 days
  • Stainless Steel: 3 to 7 days
  • Wood: Up to 2 days
