How to Renew Indian Passport in 10 Easy Steps?

When discussing a trip across borders, a passport is one of the foremost things that comes to mind. A valid passport is a document that proves your residency in your home country and helps you simplify the legal formalities during an international visit.

When Should You Apply For Passport Renewal Online?

You must apply for passport renewal before the validity of your passport expires or soon after the expiry of the validity period. You may apply for a re-issue of your passport if you lose it before its validity expires. Generally, an Indian passport has a validity of up to 10 years.

How to Renew Passport Online in India?

The passport renewal procedure can be carried out in ten easy steps as mentioned below:

Step 1: Visit the Passport Seva Online Portal. Use your email id to register yourself on the portal.

Step 2: Once you have generated newly registered credentials, log on to the Passport Seva Online Portal with your username and password.

Step 3: Click the "Apply for Fresh Passport / Re-issue of Passport" tab on the…..An online application form will open in a new tab.

Step 4: Enter the required information in the form and click the “submit” button.

Step 5: Next, you must schedule an appointment at the Passport Office by clicking the "Pay and Schedule Appointment" link on the "View Saved / Submitted Applications" screen.

Note: Only the Online Payment mode is acceptable for booking appointments at all the PSK/POPSK/PO branches.

Step 6: You need to pay the online fee for the passport renewal process through any of the following modes:

  • Credit/Debit Card (MasterCard and Visa); OR
  • Net Banking [State Bank of India (SBI) Associate Banks and Other Banks] using SBI Bank Challan

Step 7: Finally, click the "Print Application Receipt" link to print the application receipt. This receipt will mention the Application Reference Number (ARN), which will serve as your Appointment Number.

Note: You no longer need to carry the printout of the Application Receipt. You will receive an SMS mentioning all your appointment details, which will serve as proof of appointment while you visit the Passport Office.

Step 8: Prepare all the original documents for the passport renewal process.

Step 9: Within 90 days of online application, you must visit the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Regional Passport Office (RPO) on the appointment date.

Step 10: Within 30-60 days, you will receive your reissued passport at your home address.

What are the Documents Required for Passport Renewal Process?

The document checklist for the passport renewal online differs according to your reason for renewing your passport. Here are the essential passport renewal documents required for different cases: 

Documents Required for Renewal of Indian Passport before Expiry Date

  • Old Passport in original 
  • Self-attested photocopy of its first two and last two pages, including:
    • ECR / Non-ECR page (formerly ECNR passport) 
    • The page of observation, made by the Passport Issuing Authority and validity extension page, if any, in respect of short validity passport

Note: You will also require the above-mentioned documents if you apply for renewal of Indian passport after expiry date in India or exhaustion of pages in the passport.

Documents Required for Re-issue of a lost Indian passport

  • Proof Of Date Of Birth. Refer to the acceptable Date of Birth Proofs.
  • Proof Of Present Address. Refer to the acceptable Address Proofs.
  • Affidavit clearly stating how and where you lost your Passport.
  • Original FIR report in Hard copy
