Generally, an Indian passport has a validity of up to 10 years.

How to Renew a Passport Online in India? 

The passport renewal procedure can be carried out in 10 easy steps as mentioned below: 

Step 1: Visit the Passport Seva Online Portal. Use your email ID to register yourself on the portal. 

Step 2: Once you have generated newly registered credentials, log on to the Passport Seva Online Portal with your username and password. 

Step 3: Click the "Apply for Fresh Passport / Re-issue of Passport" link.  An online application form will open in a new tab. 

Step 4: Enter the required information in the form and click the "submit" button. 

Step 5: Next, you must schedule an appointment at the Passport Office by clicking the "Pay and Schedule Appointment" link on the "View Saved / Submitted Applications" screen to schedule an appointment. 

Note: Only the Online Payment mode is acceptable for booking appointments at all the PSK/POPSK/PO branches.

Step 6: You need to pay the online fee for the passport renewal process through any of the following modes:

  • Credit/Debit Card (MasterCard and Visa)
  • Net Banking [State Bank of India (SBI) Associate Banks and Other Banks] 
  • SBI Bank Challan

Step 7: Finally, click the "Print Application Receipt" link to print the application receipt. This receipt will mention the Application Reference Number (ARN), which will serve as your Appointment Number. 

Note: You no longer need to carry the printout of the Application Receipt. You will receive an SMS mentioning all your appointment details, which will serve as proof of appointment while you visit the Passport Office.

Step 8: Prepare all the original documents for the passport renewal process. 

Step 9: Within 90 days of online application, you must visit the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Regional Passport Office (RPO) on the appointment date. 

Step 10: Within 30-60 days, you will receive your reissued passport at your home address.

  • ECR / Non-ECR page (formerly ECNR passport) 
  • The page of observation, made by the Passport Issuing Authority and validity extension page, if any, in respect of short validity passport
