The Indian Embassy has released an important advisory for Indian citizens travelling to Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s visa-free island. Although this destination remains popular among Indian tourists, authorities have highlighted two key concerns: visa restrictions and the risk of losing passports.
What is the Advisory for Indian Travellers?
Indian nationals planning a trip to Phu Quoc, a popular Vietnamese island offering visa-free entry, have been urged to carefully follow entry rules. The advisory notes that while the island offers a 30-day visa-free stay, this exemption is subject to strict conditions.
The embassy emphasised that travellers must ensure they meet all requirements to avoid complications during their visit.

First Warning: Visa-Free Travel Comes With Conditions
Phu Quoc Island allows Indian citizens to enter without a visa, making it an appealing spot for easy international travel. However, this exemption has a strict limitation; it is only valid for travel to the island.
Indian authorities have warned that travellers cannot enter mainland Vietnam, including major cities such as Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, without a valid Vietnamese visa. This rule is crucial in unexpected situations, such as medical emergencies or flight disruptions, when travellers may need to reach the mainland.
In these cases, those without a valid visa could face immigration issues, delays in obtaining healthcare, and restrictions on further travel. To avoid these issues, Indian nationals should obtain the correct Vietnam visa before leaving, even if they plan only to visit Phu Quoc.
Second Warning: Passport Loss Can Delay Return
The second major concern in the advisory is passport loss during travel. Authorities have reported several cases where Indian travellers lost/misplaced their passports in Vietnam, leading to extended stays and logistical issues.
If a passport is lost, travellers must file a police complaint promptly in the area where it was lost. This report is required to apply for an Emergency Certificate or travel document from the Indian Embassy in Hanoi or the Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City.
While Indian authorities aim to issue emergency travel documents on the same day, the process does not stop there. Vietnamese authorities usually take 3 to 5 working days to issue an exit permit, and sometimes it can take longer. During this time, travellers must stay in Vietnam, which can lead to unexpected expenses and delays.
Advisory Urges Careful Planning
The Indian Embassy has urged travellers to take precautions:
- Carry proper documentation while travelling
- Keep their passports safe during travel
- Stay informed about local immigration rules
The advisory emphasises that while Phu Quoc is an appealing visa-free destination, being prepared can help avoid unnecessary delays and complications.
