As India prepares for its 77th Republic Day celebrations on January 26, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport will experience temporary daily disruptions in flight operations. This disruption is for almost 2.5 hours as preparations for Republic Day ramp up. The government’s safety measures ahead of the January 26 celebrations are likely to affect thousands of passengers during this busy travel period.

Flight Operations to Be Suspended Daily

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport will stop flight operations for about 2 hours and 25 minutes each day until January 26 for Republic Day preparations. The Airports Authority of India issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM). The airport’s runways and controlled airspace will close daily from January 21 to January 26 between 10:20 am and 12:45 pm.

During these daily pauses, no arrivals or departures will be allowed. This rule applies to both domestic and international flights. The temporary suspension happens during busy morning flight times. This raises concerns about schedule disruptions for thousands of travellers.

Why are the Suspensions Necessary?

The closures are related to increased security protocols and rehearsal schedules for Republic Day in the national capital. Security forces and civil aviation authorities implement these airspace restrictions each year to support aerial flypasts, parade rehearsals, and ceremonial drills that are integral to the January 26 celebrations.

Officials emphasise that these restrictions are standard practice and essential to maintaining safety and order during Republic Day events, which attract dignitaries from across the country.

What will be the Impact on Flights and Passengers?

As a result, hundreds of flights may be rescheduled, delayed, or even cancelled due to the daily closures. Airlines have started to inform affected passengers and encourage them to stay in touch for updates on their itineraries and any possible alternative arrangements.

In addition to the Republic Day restrictions, dense winter fog and low visibility are already disrupting travel at IGIA. This situation is causing delays and creating problems for airlines and travellers.

What Should Travellers Do?

Passengers flying to or from Delhi between now and January 26 should:

  • Check flight status regularly with carriers.
  • Arrive at airports well in advance of your scheduled departure time.
  • Prepare for possible rescheduling or rerouting due to the temporary shutdowns.

With both weather and security measures affecting flight movement, patience and proactive planning will be essential for those navigating air travel in the nation’s capital this month.
