India and Germany announced a significant step to boost their relationship on Monday, January 12, 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz introduced measures to improve cooperation in defence, trade, technology, and mobility.
In a key attempt to make international travel easier and strengthen connections between the countries, Germany has announced that Indian passport holders can transit through its airports without a visa.
This decision emerged on January 12, 2026, during important discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. It represents a significant milestone in the relationship between India and Germany.
With the new policy, Indian nationals no longer need a Schengen Airport Transit Visa (Type A) when passing through German airports en route to another country. This change should provide significant relief to Indian travellers, who previously had to apply for a transit visa even when they stayed in the airport's international transit area.
The visa-free transit option applies to Indian passport holders transiting through major German airports, including Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, and Düsseldorf. Passengers can now change flights within Germany without extra paperwork, as long as they stay in the airport’s international transit zone and have valid travel documents and visas for their final destination.
However, officials explained that this exemption does not permit entry into Germany or any other Schengen country. Indian travellers who plan to leave the airport or stay in Germany will still need to apply for the right Schengen visa.
The visa-free transit decision significantly relaxes travel rules for Indian nationals passing through Germany. Here are the main points of the newly announced policy:
Indian travellers will be able to use visa-free transit facilities at major German airports, including:
The policy is expected to provide several benefits for Indian passengers, including:
Travel industry experts think this change will boost Germany’s status as a top transit hub for Indian flyers.
In addition to travel facilitation, India and Germany confirmed their commitment to expanding collaboration in education and skilled mobility. Prime Minister Modi invited German universities to establish campuses in India and emphasised the importance of academic partnerships.
The visa-free transit decision demonstrates a strengthening of the India-Germany partnership and a shared goal of simplifying cross-border movement while improving cooperation in key sectors.
