Good news for pilgrims planning the Amarnath Yatra 2026: the Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board (SASB) has doubled the accidental insurance coverage from Rs 5 Lakh to Rs 10 Lakh.
Additionally, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has set up 100-bed hospitals and will deploy 100,000 security personnel to ensure a safe and comfortable pilgrimage. This move aims to provide better financial protection for registered pilgrims and others involved in the pilgrimage, including service providers, officials, seasonal workers, and pujaris.
The yearly Amarnath Yatra is among India's most sacred pilgrimages, attracting thousands of devotees to the cave of Lord Shiva in Jammu and Kashmir. This year, it will run from July 3 to August 28, spanning 57 days. Pilgrims must register beforehand, and authorities recommend obtaining a medical fitness certificate before embarking on the pilgrimage.
"This benefit will be available to all pilgrims with RFID cards. In addition, 100-bed hospitals at Chandanwari and Baltal, staffed by doctors and super-specialists, will provide immediate medical assistance. An additional 4x4 ambulances and health camps will be stationed along the trek," said Divisional Commissioner Anshul Garg. Free medical services will be available throughout the pilgrimage, with volunteer doctors from across India joining the effort.
While many devotees undertake the pilgrimage safely, insufficient preparation may elevate the risk of severe health issues. Individuals with pre-existing medical conditions, elderly persons, and first-time trekkers should seek medical advice in advance and confirm that any chronic ailments are well managed before beginning the journey.
“Since February, the administration, the Shrine Board, and service providers have been meeting regularly to identify challenges and ensure a seamless pilgrimage experience. We expect greater participation this year, and all preparatory arrangements have been made accordingly,” Garg added.
To handle the surge, arrangements for accommodation, food, sanitation, drinking water, and transportation have been increased. Registration counters, including e-KYC and on-the-spot facilities, have been expanded to facilitate the process. BRO teams have already cleared the tracks on both axes, ensuring a smoother passage for devotees.
“Yatra is not just about faith; it is about spirit. Doubling the insurance cover and setting up hospitals show that the administration is finally thinking beyond security, towards the well-being of pilgrims,” said Mohammad Ashraf, a local schoolteacher from Anantnag.
